The City Council of Sarajevo unanimously adopted the Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan of the Sarajevo Canton, and the City of Sarajevo

At its 45th session, the City Council of Sarajevo adopted the Plan for Sustainable Urban Mobility of the Sarajevo Canton and the City of Sarajevo – SUMP. The project is part of the Open Regional Fund for Southeast Europe - Energy Efficiency (ORF-EE) implemented by GIZ on behalf of the German government.

The Sustainable Urban Mobility Plan of Sarajevo Canton and the City of Sarajevo is a strategic plan designed to meet people and businesses' mobility needs in Sarajevo and the surrounding area for a better quality of life.

The plan is based on existing planning practices and considers the principles of integration, participation, and evaluation. New approaches to urban mobility planning include developing a strategy that can encourage a shift to cleaner and more sustainable modes of transport, such as walking, cycling, public transport, new patterns of car use and ownership, the use of new technologies, and the adoption of new sustainable urban logistics concepts.

The basic principles that this document has followed and successfully incorporated into its content are:

  • A participatory approach involving citizens and all stakeholders;
  • Sustainability that will balance economic and social development and the quality of the environment;
  • An integrated approach that takes into account the practices and policies of different sectors, levels of government, and institutions;
  • A clear vision, purpose and focus on achieving measurable goals as well as the principles of sustainable development are built into this plan;
  • The principle of cost-benefit analysis of sustainable urban mobility, taking into account wider societal costs and benefits.
